“Sokol” 1964
..

Our rock in 2011 will be 50 years. That is because much time has passed since that winter of 1961, when Riga Valery Saifutdinov nicknamed “Seyntski” collected the first of our Fatherland rock band. It was called “Revengers”. I do not know who he is taking revenge (“Revengers” translated to English means “The Avengers”), but it was even and did not rock at all. His band plays a mixture of boogie-woogie, jazz and rock and roll, or more simply, dzhampl-jive. This – the music, which formed the basis of the youth subculture as early as before Bill Haley on the big stage, and by the way, the nickname his Seyntski received, as they say, from the name of the evergreen jazz hit “When The Saints Go Marchin ‘In” (“When the Saints Go Marching In “), which he performed on a conventional acoustic guitar wherever possible and where not.

When Seyntski started to play it, he was 17 years old. In the early 70’s he emigrated to the United States where, together with Alexander Lerman and Yuri Gross participated in the first Russian-American group, “Sasha and Yura,” became famous thanks to her man on the West Coast, appeared in programs with the most legendary American rockers. Now he has his own – and very decent – the studio in San Diego, where recorded by many famous musicians. Seyntski recently visited Moscow. His hair has long turned gray, but in his eyes is devilish rock ‘n’ roll light, rhythmic movements and, in general, he is young! Amazing! Almost sixty years of rock ‘n rollschik Seyntski under other – many! – Twentysomethings boys bypassed rock ‘n’ roll party. Yes, the man playing rock and roll is different from the person who does not play rock and roll …

And the rock world in 2003 was 50 years. Birthday of the music is celebrated around the world, April 12: in 1953, the day Bill Haley at a dance at Madison Square Garden was first performed his famous hit, “Rock around the clock.” However, in the programmke he then was listed not as “rock ‘n’ roll,” but as “foxtrot.”

And since then, they have – since 1953, we have – to 1961-th, is furious and the result of the ongoing dispute about what a rock. First, musicologists have described him as the music played on electric guitar, and with emphasis on the strong part. This definition was correct, but only for the early 60’s, the times of big-beat. The evolution of music has shown that it is possible, for example, and symphonic forms of rock music, where the distribution of strengths and weaknesses of shares of rhythm is quite different than the original. And such vivid personalities as American Frank Zappa, our Sergei Kurehin or Yugoslav group “Laibach”, proved that rock ‘n’ roll can be made of the march, a waltz of rock and roll.

Indeed, the electric guitar revolutionized the music. However, in the 70’s group “Kraftwerk”, “Emerson, Lake & Palmer”, as well as many artists disco, and today the group, performing a style of “techno” at all cost without guitars, but that their music is no less fatal. Then, musicologists have proposed a new definition: rock music – it’s something that has rhythm and blues foundation. But this is, in principle, a true statement in due course become obsolete, because in the 90 years of the twentieth century there were a lot of musicians – Scottish, Icelandic, Chinese, Tuvan, Russian – have completely replaced in the creativity of rhythm and blues structure on its national folklore. Moreover, such experiments have already started in the late 60’s, when guitar virtuoso Carlos Santana replaced his music blues to flamenco. True, even then began to say that Santana – it does not rock. ”

And of course, we must not forget that rock culture – is not only music, but also a complex of modern technology, in which an equal share of the music is now occupied by design, film, electronic media, synthesizers, computer.

However, it can be much simpler? It seems to me that rock – it’s just a substitute for the sun on an overcast day. When through the clouds, multiple layers ukryvshimi sky has not seen any ray of light, when the champs nasty wet snow under your feet, even when the asphalt becomes unreliable unsteady swamp, when a gloomy winter crushes everything that could not hide from it, rock – it’s the only what else can warm it up. One might say that rock – it’s a substitute home, which was somewhere far away …

Maybe human Boris Grebenshchikov, said in an interview with the famous (I do not know who took this interview from BG, the other person is marked simply by the letter “M”. But this is the best interview with BG, which I have ever read. It hodilo a photocopy of the rock community in the late 80’s. The state of my copy, more or less suitable for reading, and met up whiter shade of pale. – Comm.’s) that the rock – it’s a hub, which draws its energy and is the structure of the central nucleus , energy of light. Rock – is a form that was originally just that, and it never stopped connecting these or other channels, the ones that other generations, and those and other sectors, but he is always primary. That is, is that there is so, just natural energy, such as, for example, the sun, which can neither leave nor go, nor to roll, to be only for this generation and not for the next one. It is an eternal thing, the eternal and absolute! ”

He was echoed and Sergei Zharikov (“DK”): “Rock the maximum pump up the energy, the rock allowed to go forward, not just destroy furniture. A just state is the bearer of decadence: all these “pindzhachniki-Komsomolets, who sang compassionate songs like” The village Kryukovo … “Unfortunately, they now call the tune …”

Or maybe a rock – it’s Pushkin? So said Roman Suslov, leader of “polite refusal”. Indeed, in the crucible of rock perekipeli blues, boogie-woogie music of white America hillbilli, European symphonic tradition, Indian raga, Gypsy tabor music, Celtic pagan dances and even Russian dancing! And it so happened that this whole mix of European and African traditions in the twentieth century came back to Europe, giving second life to folk music in the Old World, which seemed to have evolved by this time in a museum exhibit.

At the junction of the XX and XXI centuries in the capital was marked by a boom in popularity, performing so-called Celtic music. They hold their festivals, have a wide and stable enough audience, however, such a situation exists throughout the European world. What is it? Random bending mode, which bud and shall fade? Or a new time magical rasp skinned later cultural layers, returning us to the archaic world, to the roots to the origins?

To get answers to questions that concern me, I turned to the musicians popular “Celtic” groups “TELENN GWAD”. Flutist Paul Markelov: “We see, we hear, we see contact between two cultures, the Celtic pagan and Orthodox. But if you look deeper, it all comes from the same root! Contact a branch crown. It’s like a mushroom thread, it neobryvna! I am more than sure that everything comes from one grain: the Celtic culture is just as pagan as the Slavic culture, the Orthodox have not lost their pagan roots, it is impossible to disengage from their culture, from its roots. That is the rock – a movement to the roots. ”

Yuri Ermakov, leader of the “Falcon” and author of the first rock songs in Russian, recalled that in the 60 years when it was just beginning, our rockers feel intimate and organic relationship with the international rock community. “We thought – said Ermakov – that our favorite” Rolling Stones “we were brothers in the struggle against the totalitarian system. In general, music has no nationality, no boundaries. Like, say, the march could not be German or Russian, a march – it’s everywhere march. And rock music! It has no boundaries, but if we grew up on Chuck Berry or “Rolling Stones”, it does not mean that we are British or Americans. Despite the fact that we played rock, we were Russian, we are quite consciously feel that they are here, in Russia, and, of course, all this led to the fact that when we started writing his own songs, we started to write them in Russian … ”

I happened to be a party night conversations Tolik Krupnova, leader of the “Black Obelisk” and the well-known sociologist Andrew Ignatieff. As a result of these conversations, Andrew has written a book about hard rock, which is now translated into many languages and is considered the first scientific study of the sociological nature of the “heavy metal”. I remember Tolik demanded that Andrew gave him a precise definition of the place of rock music in a number of different types and genres of music. Andrew then, remember, a few tired, wrote a “cart”: “If you woke up this morning and found that the questions of this kind can answer briefly and clearly, then most likely you have already died.” At such a difficult question to answer briefly, then you can not live without metaphors. Therefore, Andrew eventually offered a metaphor: “Imagine – he said Krupnova – that there is some construction of welded pipes, corners, and at it from different sides of the light falls. On one wall the shadow looks like, say, a romanticism of the XIX century, on the other – as jazz of the twentieth century, and the third – like, say, church music of the XV century, and still have such a screen, where the shadow of this design – “heavy metal” , so here’s the music – this is a design that in the middle, and this – its different projections on different screens, historical, social and psychological. ”

But in any case, as the poet said Arkady Semenov, only allows you to rock in Russian yank on his shirt, shouted into their ears and do not give a turn!

Chapter 1. SHORT HISTORY OF RUSSIAN ROCK AND ROLL

So, as mentioned above, it all started in 1961. Jamaican Rastafarians believe this year’s holy, because its numbering is read from left to right and from right to left (unless, of course, the number of flip upside down). Until 1961, as it were, there was nothing after 1961 appeared all: big-beat and the first success The Beatles, free jazz, blues twist and white, as well – the first manned space flight … Since 1961, the symbol of the era are Yuri Gagarin Che Guevara, Fidel Castro and, of course, “the music more punch.” Worldwide is the invasion of big-beat, and our country – not the exception. Following the Riga “Revengers” appeared the first group in Moscow. Initially, they consisted mainly of foreign students and children of Western diplomats, who studied at Moscow universities. The most famous was a group of “Cockroaches,” which played the Polish students, a little inferior to her in the popularity of another group of Polish students – “Mirage” on solo guitar in which he played Seweryn Krajewski, future star of the Polish rock group leader “Red Guitar” .

In 1963 in Moscow there was also the first real bit of the domestic group. It was called “Brothers” and performed the “firm” repertoire in English.

At first, rock music was highly elitist phenomenon, but after 1965 it is time to “thousands of colors”, and in 1966 – 1967, if the explosion occurred, and literally every school groups began to appear, sometimes two or three at once. “It was kind of a new culture, with nothing comparable – talks about those days Ratskevich Vladimir, one of our first rock musicians, the group leader” Ruby Attack “. – Such an emotional charge did not have to feel from any form of art. Then came the musicians. Immediately a lot. Initially, the game just in doorways, there sounded the interpretation of The Beatles, Kinks, Swinging Blue Jeans. And this driveway life slowly evolved into the formation of different groups. ”

“We have a very powerful impetus was given The Beatles – says Yuri Ermakov. – Up to them after the Anglo-American rock scene is built entirely by other laws, it consisted of separate stars, which required treatment to him as to the idols, and were terribly far from the people – all of these Sedakov Neil, Paul Anka, Cliff Richard. And The Beatles showed that the rock band may appear at each entrance. So there were all these The Searchers, Kinks, Spencer Davis Group, Cream. So there we are. In general, I must say that the general trends in fashion, music, they are common to the whole world. They are able to overcome any ideological barriers, they are not able to contain no walls, no censorship. Of course, different countries have some differences, but the charm and image generation, as a rule, unique to the world. This is – a global process that goes around the world.

And we had all the same. We are gathered, bought a guitar to 7.50 and started to learn to play them. Then assigned roles: “You’re going to play bass guitar – I told my classmate Igor Goncharuk – and I play guitar and sing.” In the same way any other group – “Argonauts,” “heirs,” “Slavs” … Actually it would be nice to list them all, maybe the whole cycle so to do, because it took many years and I can say objectively that they were people are extremely talented and imaginative, not only in music but also in terms of implementation of their ideas: it is nothing we have not had, and it was necessary to find tools to organize a group to punch, push this idea! ”

Traditionally, the summer of 1965 begins the history of Russian rock. It was then that was written and performed the first rock song in Russian. The song is called “Where is the edge?”, It sang Moscow band “Falcon”. “I came across the writing of the song melody from the band’s first album” Pretty Things “- was such a good group, in which even Jimmy Page played as a session musician – says Yuri Ermakov. – The music we wrote quickly, but then faced with the headache Russian rockers of all time: how to write a word in Russian for rock songs, if they do not fit into any rock ‘n’ roll size? Phonetics of Russian language is very difficult to bear for a rock ‘n’ roll rhythm. And we began to look up words that are phonetically would be a little like the British. That’s where came “Where is the edge?” – The equivalent English phrase “Voch th edge?” …

And the most popular band 60 is a group of “Scythians”, who had in his repertoire for many hits in Russian – “Autumn”, “Songs of the birds,” “I’m going against the wind” and others. Once on the screens of the country the film came out Mr. Nathanson’s “Once Again About Love,” which co-starred in an episode of a group of “Scythians”, the country was at first “mania” – “skifomaniya. “We had to suspend the concert because the hall was beginning to happen is that the leaders were afraid of rooms, as if all these buildings are not collapsed. It was the spring of 1968 “- says Yuri Valov, bass guitarist for the band” Scythian “.

The success of the “Scythians” was associated with participation in a group of fantastic guitarist Sergei Dyuzhikova. Rumors about a talented guitarist went the year before that success. Dyuzhikov was born in the officer’s family and his childhood with his parents traveled half the country, and when he was 13 years old, his father was sent to the city of Izmail, standing almost on the border with Romania. There Dyuzhikov could not only listen to the radio, but also to look at the Romanian Television performances of famous Western rock bands. Because of this he was then probably the only man in Moscow who is correct, on rock ‘n’ roll played on guitar, and knew many tricks, which were used by Chuck Berry, Rolling Stones, “and that Moscow did not know how anybody else.

Appearance in Moscow Dyuzhikova can even compare with the arrival in England, Jimi Hendrix: that while rhythm and blues in England was ready to enter a new stage of development, but no one knew how to do it – only knew Hendrix.

However, all this has not been in rock music in today’s understanding. This music is called big-bit. Guitarist for “The Scythians” Yuri Valov said: “The word” rock “at all never even used, because it could only hurt. After all, to somewhere to perform, and student and school band had to be held scythe, though not at the level of regional committee of Komsomol, but at least at the level of the local Komsomol organization: someone will be in charge of everything that came in scene. And we’re playing, “Stones and The Beatles, Animals and the Kinks, the names of their songs are written in Russian:” Ballad of a hero, “” Memories of the dead sailors. ” It was all zalitovano, and in fact we durili boss heads, but they do not perceive. The words “rock” was not at all. Then it was called “Big Beat. Rock is considered everything that was in the 50’s: Elvis, Litll Richard … ”

It is said that student competitions, school yards and just beat teams were in the 60 years, almost every week. Seyshnov atmosphere was joyful and celebratory and, according to the musicians themselves, no power rockers are not “persecuted.” If u have occurred any “attacks”, then, as a rule, it was a private ideological initiative of individual citizens.

For example, we found out that sadly memorable Squad “Birch, driving in the metropolitan hippanov” Broadway “, ie on the left side of the street from Gorky’s Pushkin Square to the Hotel Moskva, the top one did not organize. Creating impact antihippovogo squad was the personal initiative of several young communists. Interestingly, in the years of stagnation, many participants “Birches” occupied the important and responsible positions in the upper echelons of the Communist Party, becoming the secretaries of the various city and regional Party committees.

Yes, and it was a thankless business – to pursue music as parents many of them occupy important positions. For example, the father of Valentine Nekrasov, the guitarist of “balm” and “Red Devils” in the 60 years was rector Bauman Bauman. One of Valentine’s classmates began scribbling on his denunciations, perhaps for ideological reasons. But once these denunciations were on the table, Provost, snitch, immediately and in disgrace, was expelled from the Institute of …

And how easy is it was “run over” by a group of “Falcon”, if the father is the guitarist of the group Yuri Ermakov was the chief defense of the country? Group “Falcon” to the party have been accompanied by the KGB, but his task was not so much to “chase” music, but in fact, to protect them from unwanted contacts. Many of the concerts of our bit-groups were held in foreign embassies, and the KGB kept a sharp lookout to ensure that security did not come through his son on some secret dad.

From the outset, beginning in Moscow rock community was formed around the musicians institute managers who organized concerts and distributing tickets. The best-known managers were Yuri Aizenshpis, Arthur Makarov, who later became a popular radio broadcaster, Valeriy Shapovalov, nicknamed “Colonel”, and later – Antonin Krylov, nicknamed “Shark.”

However, the bulk of the concerts in the 60 years, arranged the Komsomol, which was obliged to engage with young people. The apotheosis was the finale of the festival of student ensembles, which took place in May 1968 at the Palais des Sport in Luzhniki. His winners (including the legendary band “The Scythians”) were sent to the south to entertain Soviet athletes preparing for the Olympic Games in Mexico City.

In the same 1968 in Yerevan, at the Palais des weightlifting held a rock festival, which can be considered a Proc. His organized Rafik Mkrtchyan, who invited the Armenian capital’s best performers from Moscow, Leningrad, the Ukraine and the Baltics. Since then the festival has been held annually, it was a great success and ceased to exist only in 1972 when Rafik planted …

Andrei Makarevich told how he wanted to get to the Moscow team of musicians, which is specially for the festival was Rafiq. However, in the composition of the stars of the Moscow rock it did not take, but it really was superkomanda: “Soviet Tom Jones Sergey Grachev (vocals,” The Best Years “),” Ray Charles Soviet Leonid Berger (vocals, “Orpheus”), “Soviet Jimi Hendrix “Sergei Dyuzhikov (guitar,” Scythians “), Igor Saulskiy (key,” Best Years “,” Skomorokhy “), Victor Degtyarev (bass,” Scythians “) and Yuri Fokin (drums,” Flowers “) – all as the selection, handsome, professionals and real superstar of those years. “We returned three days later artists, crazy with happiness, – says Andrey Makarevich. – They told me something incredible. About a colossal machine, exhibited at the scene of roaring crowd of fans in Yerevan Moscow rock, about how artists solemnly carried in the arms of the Palace of Sports to the hotel … ”

Following the Moscow rock virus has spread to other regions. By the end of the 60 per hundred exceeded the number of ensembles and in St. Petersburg. The most popular groups were the “Vanguard-66” (later the ensemble went to the professional scene, changing the name to “kind good fellow”), “Argonauts,” “Flamingo”. As in Moscow, they initially performed covers of favorite British hit, and the first group of St. Petersburg, zapevshey in Russian, is an ensemble of “Nomads”, consisting of which, incidentally, played Mikhail Boyarsky – ours, rocker man in the Big cinema.

Kiev rock fans honored in 1966 as a starting point of Ukrainian rock. Of course, most local groups, too, only copied the foreign musicians, but for Ukraine, the fact of the appearance of a bit-group was the nature of the rebellion, experienced more acutely than in the capital. The first group of Kiev – “Chimes”, “Red Devils”, “Second Breath”, “One day, perhaps, could become famous, like their colleagues from Moscow and Petersburg, but due to lack of time in our normal show business information environment the opportunity they never came.

In the early years of our rock-music community, there flowed a single stream – big-bit. The first group appeared in Moscow – “Brothers,” “Slavs”, “trolls”, “Music lovers”, “Mirages,” “Vultures,” “Rubies” and others – carefully performed overseas hits. However, they have a problem was – to bring to music lovers the exact sound of your favorite tunes. Therefore, the level of “slope” a musician is measured by how closely it copies the original. In the late 60’s, when up to our rock community came the idea of a hippie and psychedelic sounds, elegant simplicity of big-beat has given way to complex rhythmic compositions, instrumental solos came to detailed, conceptual distortion, rich timbre coloration. And the musicians themselves have ceased to feel only radios to send people overseas hits. Our rockers started writing her own songs. But no sooner did this happen, as manifested itself the memory of blood and national melodic passages penetrated into new music. The most advanced rockers and did marched towards experiments with a folk sound. Alexander Lerman, Alexander Gradskij, the “Tin Soldiers” and “Mosaic” is already in the 60 years, intuitively feeling the correct way, tried to combine rock with traditional Russian folk melodies, and classic Russian poetry. Later on the same road and moved the group “Flowers”: its main composer of the early 70’s Sergey Dyachkov in search of inspiration even went to the folklore expeditions to the North of Russia. Tunes and techniques of sound production found in those journeys were the basis of many hits of this legendary group.

Came the 70-ies. Many musicians have graduated from their institutions, and before them was the problem of the choice: to start daily activities according to reports received in the field of higher education or go to professional musicians. As a result, some groups that were recently on the top lines of the then ratings – “Falcon”, “Scythians,” “Winds of Change” – ceased to exist. Former rocker idols young 60’s were forced to seek employment in the formal VIA: “The Scythians” in full force went to the Blue Guitar, “Alexander Lerman (” The Winds of Change “), Alexander violently and Vladimir Polonsky (Skomorokhy”) – in ” Funny Guys “, a group of Valery Shapovalov” Muscovites “joined in the accompanying cast of Russian folk songs by Ivan Surzhikova.

But some rock groups who were born later, taking unsuccessfully attempted to go into professional life in the original version: to work in various philharmonic arranged Arsenal Alexei Kozlov, “Flowers” Stas Namin, unexpected support in the face of the head of the Lenin Komsomol Theater Mark Zakharov finds Group “Araks”, speaking before on the dance floor in Lyubertsy. Trace and Alexander Gradskij, graduating Gnessin Institute, begins his career as a professional composer.

Group, which had ratings below, are battling for a permanent place on the dance floors of Moscow and Moscow region. In the early 70’s there was no such thing as a “rock concert”, it was dancing, student party, on which were “live” group. The most important thing is that the ensemble could enter into contracts with dance halls, houses of culture and even the local philharmonic and concert activities to earn money. Local administration, as a rule, there was no case to the ideology of rock bands, they were the main charges of speeches. Of course, the director of community centers have expressed a dissenting opinion, but it usually comes down to requests to play more quietly.

Alexander Gradskij told a TV channel as saying the 70’s: “No we are not haunted! All this is nonsense. But we invite anyone anywhere not invited. So we sat in their basements … ”

The problem of VIA was that most of the leaders of these bands grew big bat, they have long fought for the right to play their favorite music in the show business, that is legal to receive money for their performances, and achieving their own, VIA began to play big- bits as a symbol of victory. But around the world at that time in fashion came in hard rock, and VIA, as it were missed, shot with great pomp, but hit the “milk”. And as a result – the new generation has chosen dance floor, where blaring hard rock. In principle, an amateur group is completely filled the vacuum, and peaceful coexistence could continue for a long time. Radical changes in the ideology of rock groups began with the fact that the authorities tried to present VIA as a true rock and role models, do not forget to provide them with the Komsomol vocabulary. On the dominance of “Gems” immunity Homeland answered the advent of rock bands with social texts. Radical groups are produced mainly in universities: the Moscow Architectural Institute – “Time Machine” and the first group of Alexei Romanov, Moscow State University – “Aras,” in MIEM – “Milky Way” (in the future – “DK”), etc.

According to contemporaries, informal ratings groups, singing in Russian in the early 70’s led by Alexander Gradskij and his Skomorokhy “,” Flowers “and” Tin Soldiers “, in the second half of the 70” tin soldiers “in the ranking has changed,” Machine of time. ” Among the groups who sing in English, were in the lead “Ruby Attack,” “Successful Purchase” and “Second Breath”, which was later replaced by Arsenal’s Alexei Kozlov. Music played on stage, in the bulk – hard rock, a little bit – the rhythm and blues (“A successful acquisition,” “Ruby Attack”) and – slightly – progressive rock (“Leap Of Summer”, “Victoria” ). In the 70 years of great popularity enjoyed folk groups such as Pesnyary, “Ariel” or “Trio Linnik.

But in the late 70’s from the west came the fashion for discos and live concerts was not enough, so in such a situation could survive only supergroup, ie groups composed of very famous musicians. Summer of 1979, Eugene Margulis and Sergey Kavagoe (ex-“Time Machine”), Alexei Romanov, Alexey Makarevich (ex-Kuznetsk Bridge “) and Andrei Sapunov (then just a student Gnesinskoe school) formed the group” Monday. ” Also in 1979, “Time Machine” to come Kutikov Makarevich and Efremov of the “leap of Summer.” Itself “Leap Of Summer” was divided into “Autograph” Sitkovetsky and “Rock-Studio” Chris trowel. “Araks” resigned from the Lenkoma and started his own concert career, gathering musicians from the famous “Jolly Fellows”, “Victoria” same “leap of Summer.” Vladimir Kuzmin, Alexander Barykin, Evgeny Kazantsev, Vladimir Boldyrev – former musicians of “Gems” and “Jolly Fellows” – founded by a group of “Carnival”.

In the 80’s started a war for redistribution Philharmonic space. The countdown to the new decade has given the festival “Spring Rhythms. Tbilisi-80 “, held in March 1980. Winners of the festival – “Time Machine”, “Magnetic Band”, “Dialogue” and others – have become the new leaders of the Philharmonic, in fact, ousted from the site of the monsters 70 – “Flowers”, “Jolly Fellows,” “Ariel”. Now the audience at the Palais des Sports and the stadiums collect new characters – “Time Machine”, “Autograph,” “Magnetic Band”, “Araks”. In 1981, the musicians of “Cruise” composed and performed the song “twist top”, which started in a real “kruizomaniya,” that is a demonstration of fans, hysterical fans and all that usually accompanies a supergroup.

In response, the Union of Soviet Composers, worried about the improving financial situation of rockers, has introduced the so-called “protsentovku”, ie. ordered the official rock band to include in its repertoire the song “notebooks” composers. Now we can say that the entire war with the rock in our country have openly commercial origin, and poverty, of course, was not a life and death.

Poet Margarita Pushkina, who worked in the early 80’s with a group of “Autograph,” recalls that when hudsovet once again going to “hack” of the song Alexander Barykina, she appealed for help to an employee of the elite Soviet Komsomol organization of ILCs (Committee of Youth Organizations of the USSR) Andrei Fyodorov, apparently KGBistu, but sympathetic to what he famously danced with rock and roll, I knew all this music and well-regarded Barykina. Fedorov came to the firm “Melody” for emergency vehicles with flashing lights and hudsovet said: “We need people like Barykin!” And his answer: “We will give such people as you like, but the program Barykina not miss …” But in the repertoire “Carnival” were perfectly innocent songs! Cute, funny reggey and rock ‘n’ roll – what could be easier? But when Barykina for the eighth time did not accept the program, he sudorgoy cramped hand, and friends worried that he is no longer able to play! His tormented physically! And there was a real danger that his arm would remain stiff …

At 80 years have flourishing domestic tape culture. Rock groups and even some musicians are able to record in the studio or at home in the kitchen album, for playing time which equals the plate (35-40 minutes), then this record is replicated on the tape. The group itself is usually produced 20-30 and even up to hundreds of original album in boxes with covers, which come up and do our best artists and photographers. In the future fans of rock music simply copied these notes from one another.

Group “DK”, for example, not only has released over 30 albums of tape, but created an entirely new genre, which definitely can be considered as the contribution of Russian rock community in the world treasury of styles – “radioteatr. To many bands in the 80’s fame is due to the tape albums (the Aquarium, Zoo, “” Waterfall Vakhtang Kikabidze “,” Primus “and others). At the same time, we know a number of groups that are popular at the turn of the 70-80’s, but did not have magnitoalbomov, come to nothing (“Aras,” “Integral”, “Offset”). Therefore, some astute musicians, who had quite an official status, perceived tape culture as a natural development of the entertainment industry. For example, Yuri Chernavskii starting a new project, prefaced his tape album “Banana Island”.

Track this process to the authorities already had neither the strength nor the skill. There appeared the first amateur collectors: Moscow – Alexander Ageev (founder of the studio “Bell”), Victor Alice, Victor Lukinov, in St. Petersburg – Andrei Tropillo and Sergey Firsov, who had the complete collection of such records, they and spread magnitoalbomy among friends.

By the mid-80’s established infrastructure of music critics and rock press. And self-published magazines were popular among the people, authority and respect among musicians and provided a rock-process the most significant impact. Publication usually issued in several copies, and then selected articles reprinted on typewriters or perefotografirovalis and thus spread among the masses.

At the same time in St. Petersburg began a real rock revolution. St. Petersburg’s musicians have rallied around the figure of the legendary Boris Grebenshchikov, incidentally, exiled from the same notorious Tbilisi festival for radicalism in the music. New wave, new ideas, new people still have the upper hand, and in March 1981 in Leningrad, the street Rubinstein, 13 opened rock club – not the first, but the most famous. In the spring of 1983 St. Petersburg hosted the first rock festival – not the most popular, but formative. The names of the characters immediately fled the country – “Aquarium,” “Zoo”, “Cinema”, “manufactory”, “Strange Games” …

“Revolutionary situation” has reached Moscow. Here it is compounded by civil strife which began among the “underground” managers and holders of rooms. As a result, from February 1984 to April 1985 in the capital has not passed any of this “electric” rock concert.

Coincidence or not, but at the same time the country developed and the political crisis. In April 1985, began “restructuring.” Rock music, already densely saturated by the time social protest, the volcano exploded.

Autumn was founded Moscow City creative laboratory of rock music. Its director was an employee sector discos Scientific and Methodological Center of the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR Neat Olga, and her closest aides – respected in the underground people: Alexander Ageev (concert manager) and Victor Alice (CTO). This writer was engaged in the rock laboratory publication rock anthology “SHIFT” and newspaper “Shift-poster.” Major decisions taken hudsovet, which included the heads of all groups that have become its members. Rock Laboratory won the right to put “scythes” with songs of rock musicians, and as a result of permission for public performance, received a “very questionable conceptually group” – “Sounds of Moo”, “Metal Corrosion”, “Crematorium.”

Rock Laboratory has developed rapidly and vigorously concert in the capital. Olga Neat made to the Ministry of Culture charged amateur ensembles, were part of the rock laboratory (and there only in 1987 was more than fifty, and by the end of the decade the number exceeded one hundred), and musicians are now able to quite legally receive money for speeches. Laboratorskie group quickly mastered the concert halls of the capital and began to actively toured the cities of the USSR. And in August 1986, “Va-Bank” went to a festival in Poland, becoming the first amateur Soviet rock group, went to concerts abroad.

October 26, 1987 and does happen a unique event: the invitation of the rock laboratory in Moscow for a concert came a Finnish punk rock band “Sielun Veljet” (European chartsah – “L’Amourder). Thus Moscow rock laboratory broke the monopoly of the USSR State Concert at the invitation of foreign artists.

At the peak years of 1987-1988 popularity of rock music in our country. Sold out at the Sports Palace and the stadiums were even on the performances of groups performing experimental and completely nemassovuyu music. It was after such banner-headlines Alexei Borisov, leader of the “Night Prospectus, an underlying purpose of which was to his music,” spoil the whole mood, “decided to abandon the tasty invitation to go to work in New York at the Soviet Mission, stayed home and continued his career as a musician …

The most famous concert of the decade – “Rock-Panorama-87” in the Luzhniki Stadium, where the accomplished historical justice: the Grand Prix was one of the oldest of our rock musicians Sergey Popov and his band “Alibi” for their “last song”. It was such a minor-major national anthem, his eyes filling with tears and pouring muscles of steel. At the billboard “Rock-Panorama” band “Alibi” took quite a gray place, lost among the more hit neighbors such as “Nautilus Pompilius” or “Brigades of C, but just Popov sang on stage at Luzhniki Sports Palace his” last song “, as Hall rose to his feet. Sitting there were only twenty people somewhere in the corner of the portals – there has been little seen and heard, and they lived their lives. There immediately flew Gradskij and rich baritone voice yelled: “Get up! Toh-ti-bi-toh! All stand, and why are you sitting? “The people unquestioningly rose …

In the 80 years the palette of styles of rock music in gay colors most vivid colors. Decade began with the invasion of our rock-reggae music community. Rhythms from Jamaica captured virtually all of the musicians, the ones it was just another brick in the works (“Aquarium”, “Zoo,” “Carnival”), others – a foundation (“Sunday”, capital “Cabinet”, and later – “Polite Refusal “).

“New Wave” to set foot on our soil after reggae, first appeared in a variety of pure studio bands, the benefit of a conditional style is welcomed. These bands, often consisting of 1-2 people, almost did not give concerts, and only worked in studios on the recording of their albums (“The detachment after Valery Chkalov”, “Theater,” “Doctor”).

Seclusion underground and a focus on apartment concerts gave impetus to the development of so-called bard rock. Sergei Ryzhenko accurately analyzes the reasons for the birth of this style: “Electric rock concerts then were kind of happening, where, as a rule, the words no one heard the music of almost any were not, there was some unconvincing roar, with congestion, wheezing, with ever drunk as a sound engineer, who by the end of the program simply cut down on the number of drunk port wine and vermouth, but the people are absolutely not interested, because all Hawali energy that gave the group from the scene in response from the audience was energy, pretty heated, port wine, and very present element stirrup, because at any moment could appear cops – and they often appeared and it all ends universal knitting. Pure underground! In addition it was rare, it is not fed, and mostly people have lived with “apartment” gigs. And there you go – the crowd sits a man of fifty or a hundred, who crowd into one-room apartment, and you – only with a guitar. And they will listen? They will listen to the lyrics, so naturally all the songs were text. And well, if you managed all this translate into electricity, and could not – and so can be eaten. ”

Elitism underground and spawned a variety of avant-garde trends related to the happenings (“Last Chance”, “Central Russian Upland”), even punk rock in the early 80’s was a manifestation of our avant-garde (“Football” Sergei Ryzhenko).

By the mid-80’s on our rock scene has all the styles that existed at that time in the world: the “new wave” (“Cinema”, “Alice”, “TV”, “Alliance”), ska (“Strange Games” , Moscow’s “Cabinet”), glam (“Sounds of Moo”), break-dance (“Vector” Vladimir Ratskevich) neorokabilli (“Bravo”, “Mister Twister”), swing-rock (“Brigade S”), punk ( “AU”, “Miracle Yudo,” “amnesty,” “Pogo”), “garage” rock “(” Civil Defence “), art-rock (” Jungle “,” Nicolaus Copernicus “,” Pierrot Lunaire “) psychedelia (“Optimal”), INDUSTRIAL (“Night Prospectus”). Felt the lack of blues, but it is time the world was not enough, because the “new wave” proclaimed priorities reggae and soul. But the rock is closely interwoven with the traditions of the OIO and the Student Theatre of Miniatures (“Mango Mango”, “Port Arthur”, “Stupid,” “Scrubs”).

After a Moscow rock laboratory led underground to the surface, there was an explosion in popularity of heavy metal. Marginalized youth found in this style vent their fears and complexes. Structure of heavy metal is not only artistic value, it is filled with pagan worship ceremonies, allowing times of hardship. Therefore, the huge popularity of heavy styles have manifested itself not only as a consequence of global trends, but also because young people are too many uncertainties in their own abilities. “Metal” gave people the opportunity to feel stronger. With his appearance Moscow divided geographically: in the north and south of the capital, where margins are working, living metal, and to the west and east – the adherents of a more elitist style. Such a separation is preserved, by the way, and to this day.

In the end, our rock community and has generated its own genre – the anarchic rock. First there were groups of Muscovite, “EST”, and “Mongol Shuudan. This was punk rock, nastoenny on a national, primarily Cossack, melody and drenched the ideas of anarchy since the Civil War that our rock community was perceived as the quintessence of the idea of freedom of the spirit of rock music.

In 1989, our rock scene sounded the term “World Music”, or as we call the “ethnic music”. Groups of “polite refusal”, “Alliance” and the singer Inna Zhelannaya tried to synthesize the traditional rhythms of rock with the Russian national melody. This second attempt (and the first was undertaken in 60 years, A. Lerman, and A. Gradskij) proved more successful, and in the 90 years of experimenting with folk became mainstream.

Suddenly it was over. In August 1991, ceased to exist the Soviet Union, which disintegrated into a number of sovereign states. With the changing political geography of our rock community disintegrated internal communications, and followed the August “shock therapy” has brought to zero concert in the country, as it was impossible to send the group on tour, because the train tickets were now too expensive for the musicians, and tickets for concerts – can not afford the public. Rock Revolution 80’s, so the fun starts in St. Petersburg, has failed. Leningrad rock club closed. Behind him on the self-destruction and declared Moscow rock laboratory …

But the same can not be that nothing at all was! Rock music moved into small rooms, as once in the 60’s. Example, once again gave Moscow. October 31, 1992, Oleg Abramov, opened in the Moscow region Falcon Rock Cafe Sexton FoZD “, which is now called the first in Russia. Should open the “Street Radio”, “Home on the Range,” “Tabula Rasa”, “R-club”. In Peter earned “Nora” yes “hole”. And then, and every city has opened for rock cafe – it has become the new norm. The history of our rock end of the twentieth century – a history of small rock clubs, born already in the new time.

The main styles of the 90’s were jumping prifankovannaya alternative and reggae, which is from a fragment in the works of great bands in this movement took shape with the traditions, attributes and rules of admission to membership.

But the main style as we do, as well as abroad became “World Music” – a desperate attempt by human technological era, to find their roots. As in most European dig their own history under a layer of later cultural strata proved to be extremely difficult, many musicians have turned their attention to the periphery of the world where more could be preserved in its original form archaic cults. Until recently, “ethnicity” is often perceived as “archaeological” or “ethnographic” as a museum piece, worthy of veneration and preservation. Therefore, “ethnic” is always contrasted the “modern”, where one side argued that “modern” – a regression, and the other – that the “ethnic” is hopelessly outdated. But in the 90 years has come to understand that ethnic does not have something original and ancient. It turned out that the ethnic – historical. “World Music” – a modern style, not the exploitation of ethnic elements in favor of fashionable trends. This – the main explanation for the mass entrainment of ethnic music. And if in 80 years, ethnic music was just a field of avant-garde experiments, the most advanced, then in the 90 years she became a flesh and blood of modern music and to withdraw it from there is impossible.

Today rock music in Russia is similar to the character. A variety of styles 80’s, has sunk into the past. Now the guitar riffs just refer to a musician belonging to a particular social category. In principle, it became unimportant, what to play. The main thing was to drive. Benchmark of this new approach we have is a “Time Out”. Music group – just rock. Of course, play well, tasty served with excellent melodies. But trying to qualify the music of “timeout” stylistically – it totally hopeless. But this is not eclectic, as happened in the 70’s and 80’s. This is – just a rock. But the main thing here is different: the popularity of “timeout” is based on creating a style and mythology of a parallel world – Motologicheskogo coast. But it has always been: the great response from the public have a group, or chopping the truth, uterus, or singing “of Paris,” that is about an impossible dream.

Work Arcadia Semenov and Ivan Sokolov on the project “Soldier Seed” is just a pipe dream became a synthesis and cruel realities of life. On the cover of the album “The Plan of Salvation Constantinople” Semenov portrayed fantastic map of the world in which borders of many countries – Russia, Armenia, Turkey and Greece – have acquired new and unfamiliar to modern man shape. Of course, what makes a soldier Semenov, – a political utopia, and Arkady himself admits that he knows about it, but more and more people – some in fear, others hope – think about how this dream could be brought to life … As for the music style, which employs a duet, it looks like a hard rock. Rather, the hard rock, which became the hieroglyph.

Thus, rock music by the end of the twentieth century was more a mystery than reality. Perhaps this riddle sphinx. Perhaps it will be forgotten ancient alphabet. Let’s see …

Separately, it should be said about our achievements in the international arena. In anticipation of the big “Drang nach West ‘is the success record of Alexander Gradskiy with music and songs from the movie” Romance for Lovers “which is a reputable American music magazine” Billboard “called” the best record in 1974. ”

The first journey of our fate abroad also came out fabulously glamorous. Two of our most famous musician Yuri shafts (ex-“Scythians”) and Alexander Lehrman (ex-“Winds of Change”) emigrated to the United States, where organized the first Russian-American ensemble “Sasha & Yura”. Year and a half they toured the cities of America, speaking in the most prestigious venues with such renowned musicians as Tom Fogerthy, Bob Seeger, The Band, participating in the show, which is not easy to get even born “in USA”. Group had a resounding success, good press and even the suggestion of the “Warner Bros” release plate. During the concert Lerman talked about fulminant birth and slowly strangling rock in the Soviet Union, American newspapers and magazines – The New York Times, LATimes, The Rolling Stone – published an interview with him was a lot of programs on radio and television. In the Soviet press appeared denials, and to America on tour came Pesnyary … Unfortunately, the same spectacular sequel, which was the beginning of “Sasha and Yura” was not because they broke up because Lerman received an invitation to enroll in Yale University … Today he heads the department of Russian language and literature at the University of Delaware.

Incidentally, Lerman we know everything, because he’s famous record of David Tuhmanova “On the wave of my memory,” sang the smash hit “Heart of my heart,” but because the record came out after the departure Lerman abroad, his name on the cover of the album does not appear …

The next contact with the foreign countries was the publication in 1982 on a small U.S. record company pirated CD “Time Machine”, after which Makarevich with friends very horrible.

Four years later in America through the efforts of singer Joanna Stingray album “Red Wave” with records of St. Petersburg’s Heroes – “Aquarium”, “Cinema”, “Alice” and “Strange Games”. Again there was a scandal. But as “restructuring” is already moving around the country, all finished dismantling the fact that the largest American record company CBS invited the leader of the “Aquarium” Boris Grebenshchikov contract for 8 (!) Plates. His first U.S. album “Radio Silence” was released in 1989. Unfortunately, the record failed, the reason is that to work on “Radio Silence” BG has attracted well-known American artists who have made him a traditional U.S. average sound, for another they do not know. Grebenshchikov just got to America, he felt that his rosy dream come true to play with masters of the world stage, and for this he actually sacrificed the original sound “Aquarium”. Great is the power party! As a result, his first album and became the last, because Grebenshchikov, like many of our superstar, was born in an era of imitation of foreign idols and was unable to finish squeeze out of this “slave”.

Not less than the complexity accompanied by access to the world stage a recognized leader in the Moscow underground Mamonova Peter and his group “The Sound of Mu.” With that, his concerts were sold out at a constant, introduced in England record “Sounds of Mu” is not actually sold. The reason for failure is likely that her producer Brian Eno, has never played in our basement, it is elementary “not entered” in the specific sound of the band, and as a result – the sound on this recording is, to put it mildly, inappropriate to what was happening on stage .

More successful would be to recognize the expansion to the western market of the Moscow Gorky Park, whose debut album hit the American charts, seems to be a 74 th place. However, the development of this success has not received.

Did not give real results, and attempts of other groups to conquer the world. Vocalist “Autograph” Arthur Berkut recalls: “When we came to America, there has been very popular groups such as” Poison “or” Motley Crue “. And we played completely different. We all was navorocheno! Then our manager with a “Capitol” Herb Cohen – a very famous man, whom everybody knows to work with Frank Zappa – says: “We have to simplify everything! We must do everything easier! “And they were all rehash. And we can not understand why we were invited, if they want to make us another American group? If its not there enough? And just barely, with grief in half, we recorded the record, and we did it for very long. We write a song – it’s not, it is not suitable, verse, chorus to be rearranged! And we’ve learned that we already have everything apart, where we want to! And here comes my uncle and said: “No, it’s no good!” And we must start all over again. That is why the work went very long and was made without a soul. That is a record came out, everything is fine, but in the end so everyone got sick of it, we just took and sent to all … edrenoy mother. And left for Moscow. All except me. And I’m married. ”

What is the reason for our failures abroad? First, the pathos of our rock-revolution was inadequate calm global evolutionary process and therefore was completely incomprehensible western audience, gazing at our team as exotics. Second, in our rock on music is dominated by text and this means that most of the songs is just beyond the boundaries of consciousness do not understand Russian audience. Alexander F. Sklar, fairly trains with his “all-in ‘to foreign countries, says:” The West is more materials out there, “hawala” clean energy, and because of that the West would never be able to estimate the end of Russian rock. A Russian rock ‘n’ roll developed under the laws of the Russian language. Russian language is fit for long, measured narration. Not for nothing that all of our conversations at the table are many. And it affects the music. The first thing that comes to mind – it is necessary to lengthen the string. Dima Revyakina long songs. Ballad singing in Russian is easier, and because the ballad in the Russian rock-n-roll will be present to a greater extent than in English. And the emotional level Russian language English richer. Take, for example, Peter Mamonova, who works with an unusually short – it’s absolutely untranslatable into English! This is essentially Russian! And God is with him, with the West! Why should we be accountable to the West? West we can not decree. We are – Great Russian Empire! We absolutely enough of our great country! ”

Yet we have groups that have sustained success overseas and the first of them – just sklyarovsky “Va-Bank”. Incidentally, this is the band from Moscow, and not the “Aquarium”, the first disc recorded on the western studio. It happened in April 1988 when the “Va-Bank at the invitation of his” brothers in spirit, “the Finnish band” Sielun Veljet “went on tour to Finland. And let this country lies on the periphery of the rock life, but released the following year at the Finnish company “Polarvox” record “All In” has pushed our team to a nearly two-year voyage to Europe. Group toured with concerts almost every country of the Old World, with the exception of England, and everywhere their uncompromising rock met vigorous response from the fans of this music. True, the guitarist of the famous band “Talking Heds” Nigel Harrison, met with the “Va-Bank” in Paris, long resented the chords, which takes the guitar Egor Nikonov. Harrison believed that both can not play, because these chords do not give “euphony.” Yegor, in turn, replied: “Western rock – very sleek, very correct music to it as well eat, talk, just relax. Under Russian rock is nothing that can not be done. It can only listen, it’s best even wearing headphones so that no one distracted, or not listen at all. ” Nigel Harrison, being the tastemakers in the world of rock music, had every right to be indignant, because the fans of this “primitive” sound found in Europe a lot, play “all-in ‘to remind everyone how to play the first rockers – Chuck Berry, Muddy Voterz, Young Rolling “- let dirty, but quick and ingenuously.

Popular abroad and enjoy the group exploited the revolutionary artistic aesthetics beginning of the twentieth century – “AVIA” and “AuktYon. An even bigger success came in the share of avant-garde Kuriokhin Sergei and Sergei Letov, charm skills that will not leave indifferent experienced western listeners.

But the greatest attention overseas audience attracted all the same actors who turned to an ancient musical tradition. Joint album “Alliance” and the singer Inna Zhelannaya “Made in White” at the prestigious European competition MIDEM in Cannes has been named the best album of 1993 in the genre of “World Music”. Musicians actually declined from the usual rocker instruments, leaving only the drums and bass guitar, but brass musicians Sergei Starostin and Sergei Klivensky playing in the fabulous horn and pipe, gave a powerful drive, which is comparable in power only to that of heavy metal. Since then, Ina wanted and her musicians are welcome guests at the biggest European and world festivals.

Real success abroad is still one of our ethnic group Rock – “Yat-Kha. In the early 90’s it was founded by Tuvan singer Albert Kuvezhin and Moscow musician and arranger Ivan Sokolovsky. The concept of music “Yat-Kha” three genres: a purely ethnic music, New Age-ambent using elements of Tuvan folk and techno, as with ethnic highlights. By themselves, these three styles on each other are not like them is akin to “kyrkaraa” – one of the twelve types of throat singing, the lowest: in this way and sings Albert Kuvezhin. His voice imitates the noise of the wind, rockslides, waterfalls and roaring of wild beasts. Interestingly, the Kuvezhin performs no household songs, like most ethnic singers and martial songs of the ancient nomadic times of Genghis Khan and the real magic shamanic songs.

“World Music”, apparently, the only real possibility for Russia to break into the great world stage. Throughout the world famous Russian ballet, Russian circus. In the same way all over the world can become famous and authentic Russian music.
